When our thoughts get distorted
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” - Romans 12:2
Did you know you have more than 6,000 thoughts a day—conscious and unconscious?
Most of us assume these thoughts in our heads are telling us the truth. We rarely stop to question them.
If a thought feels familiar or convincing enough, we accept it as fact—even if it’s not a godly belief, like:
I’m not enough.
I’m beyond saving.
How could God possibly love me?
Psychologists call these cognitive distortions—ways our thinking becomes skewed toward fear, shame, or hopelessness.
Scripture calls these lies—ways the enemy tries to trick us into believing we’ve messed up too much, that we’re not loved by God just as we are.
There are some wonderful therapeutic tools we can use to rewire our brains and rewrite our thoughts. I love learning about neuroscience, and I use some of these tools myself.
But I’ve also found that only Jesus can transform our spiritual wounds: the lies we believe about who He is and who we are in Him.
It’s through His Spirit that our minds are renewed and our deepest fears are replaced with sound thinking rooted in God’s love.
What thoughts might God be inviting you to gently question today?
What truth might He want to speak in their place?
