The rhythm of rest & responsibility
“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.” - Genesis 2:2
After the holidays, life tends to speed up quickly. The calendar fills up, responsibilities return, and the weight of what God has entrusted to us becomes real again.
For some, this season brings renewed energy. For others, it brings a familiar heaviness.
Responsibility is not a bad thing. God entrusts us with work, relationships, leadership, and influence, and He calls us to steward them well.
But responsibility becomes crushing when we try to carry it alone—or when we pursue it for the wrong reasons and find ourselves pushing harder and harder until we crash and burn.
The Bible paints a beautiful picture of a well-lived life, balanced between rest and responsibility.
In passages like the Parable of the Talents, we see that God wants us to take our vocation seriously. But God also establishes the weekly Sabbath, the day of rest, and tells us His burden is easy and His yoke is light.
God invites us to steward what we’ve been given, but to remember it’s not all on us to fix, grow, or secure our futures. He tells us if we seek Him, we will find Him, that He is the gate to find pasture. He reminds us who we are beyond what we do…and because of that, we can rest—our wills, our minds, and our bodies—knowing our lives are in His hands.
Are you stewarding what God has given you, or are you carrying excessive burdens He never placed on you?
As you return to work this year, how can you reclaim the sacred rhythm of rest without skirting responsibility?
