Stalling out
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” - John 10:10
Do you ever feel that your life is idling by…that you are moving along but going nowhere?
Many men find themselves feeling these things. We go through the motions of job, family, and responsibilities but feel no joy or motivation.
Guys, we need some direction with our lives. We were meant to live lives of meaning, passion, and purpose. It is inevitable that a general mundaneness of life can eat at our souls and lead us down the wrong path.
A common temptation when life feels dull is to seek excitement and novelty, often in places that aren’t healthy for us or others.
- Flirting with that cute coworker may seem easier than planning intentional dates and rekindling the spark in your marriage.
- Buying something new is simpler than finding a vocation that is life-giving and makes you feel truly alive inside.
- Pouring yourself into a hobby is more energizing than doing the inner work to figure out why you feel dissatisfied.
I’ve discovered in my own journey that Jesus’s invitation to the “abundant life” doesn’t come from a quick fix.
Instead, I believe the abundant life is a deeper sense of eternal meaning and purpose that comes from walking with Jesus and understanding His call on your life. It’s the slow, steady joy of fidelity, commitment, faithfulness, long-term growth, serving others, and abiding in Him daily.
The next time you feel yourself stalling out in life, invite Jesus to walk with you in your confusion.
See what deeper purpose He might reveal to you, remembering that He desires for you to have life and have it abundantly.
What do you reach for when you feel bored or aimless?
How would it feel to take some different times to pause and reflect on what’s going on in your life with yourself and with Jesus? Seek Him. Seek His love and His grace and His guidance. My experience is that Jesus will meet you in that place.
