Speaking words of life
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” - Proverbs 18:21
In the Jewish tradition, words are believed to have real power.
They are not mere communication, but creative instruments that can affect reality.
Through words, vows and covenants are made—binding agreements that become truth in a person’s life.
Names are thought to have deep meaning that both captures someone’s identity and determines their destiny.
And through God’s spoken word, the whole earth came into being.
Our words to each other certainly have power, as anyone who has been hurt by a mean comment or built up by an encouraging word can attest.
But what if our words can do more than simply make someone feel good or bad?
What if they can actually call out something in someone?
What if naming someone’s gifts can help them reach their potential?
What if reflecting their good traits back to them inspires them to become better?
I take Scripture seriously when it says that death and life are in the power of the tongue.
When we speak life to each other, we can bring new things into being in the hearts and souls of those we love.
