When freedom feels like pressure
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” - Galatians 5:13
Around this time of year, we hear a lot about freedom.
And rightly so. Freedom is a gift.
But I’ve noticed something in my own life: freedom can sometimes feel less like peace and more like pressure.
When we believe everything depends on us, freedom becomes the pressure to make the right choice, build the right life, protect the right future, and never mess it up.
We can start to think, I’m free…but now it’s all on me.
That kind of freedom can become exhausting.
For a Christ follower, freedom is different.
Jesus doesn’t set us free so we can become isolated, self-sufficient men constantly trying to prove ourselves. He sets us free from sin, shame, fear, and striving so we can live in love.
Freedom in Christ is not the freedom to do whatever we want.
It’s the freedom to become who we were created to be.
Free to love without needing to control.
Free to serve without needing recognition.
Free to admit weakness without being defined by it.
Free to stop performing and rest in the love of God.
As men, we often confuse freedom with being totally independent. But the deepest freedom is not found in needing no one. It’s found in belonging to Christ and living from His love.
Where has freedom started to feel like pressure in your life?
What would it look like to receive the freedom Jesus offers—not as more weight to carry, but as an invitation to live rooted in His love?
