When comparison steals your joy
“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” - Galatians 6:4
It’s easy to catch ourselves doing it. Scrolling online and seeing updates from people who seem to be crushing it in every area of life—business success, great vacations, perfect family moments, huge accomplishments. Before you know it, subtle discouragement can begin creeping in.
You know the feeling:
Maybe I should be farther along by now.
Maybe I’m behind.
Maybe everyone else has it figured out except me.
Comparison is sneaky like that.
Comparison is exhausting.
It convinces us we’re falling behind.
Not successful enough.
Not accomplished enough.
Not far enough along.
Someone else always seems to have the better career, the stronger marriage, the clearer purpose, the more impressive life.
And in a world where we constantly see curated snapshots of other people’s lives, it becomes easy to lose sight of our own.
But comparison quietly disconnects us from gratitude.
Instead of noticing what God is doing in our lives, we fixate on what He appears to be doing for someone else.
The problem is, comparison doesn’t just distort how we see others, it distorts how we see ourselves.
God didn’t create you to live someone else’s story.
He gave you your personality, your gifts, your experiences, your calling, and even your struggles for a reason.
The goal isn’t to become someone else. It’s to become fully who God created you to be.
Where has comparison been stealing your peace or joy lately?
What would it look like to focus less on someone else’s path and more on faithfully walking your own?
